What is a wave petunia and how was it discovered? The wave petunia originated from a very unlikely source: a breeder for Kirin, a Japanese beer company, noticed an extraordinarily vigorous, spreading, wild petunia growing in their fields. Recognizing the petunia's singular qualities, Kirin partnered with PanAmerican Seed to produce this new petunia--that they called the Wave Purple Classic--and bring it to North America in 1995.
PanAmerican later merged with the Ball Seed Company becoming Ball Horticultural Company that has given us this petunia that exhibits a dramatic spread, has an exceptionally long bloom time, and has superior weather resistance.
