what’s the dirt?

Soil is one of the most important things when it comes to gardening. Soil is the foundation from which plants grow. Good soil supplies nutrients and drainage support so that roots are kept happy and healthy, whereas, bad soil blocks water movement, has little nutrients, and/or can have PH problems. We have free soil testing kits at the checkout counter that you can use via UT’s Extension service to test your home soil. However, most situations shouldn’t require that. Most of the time you need to work the ground and add organic matter/compost and drainage support.

Potting Mixes- should be for containers only. Most are Peat Moss based as is standard and not suitable for the garden typically. We do carry peat moss alternatives like Coco Loco if you prefer as well.

Garden Soil- we highly recommend soil conditioner when you plant in an area that doesn’t have the best soil and/or are planting large plant material. Soil conditioner will break up clay soils which we are very prone to here in East Tennessee. Compost and Organic Matter also help to condition the soil naturally as they decompose. When starting a new garden, both are preferable.
