Here Comes The Sun....
Abby Stanley
The Suncredible Sunflowers are possibly my favorite annual plant as of late! These beauties are SO awesome. I rant and rave about them to anyone who will listen. As cliche as it is, sunflowers have always been a favorite of mine. Probably because I love the sun and they are just pure sunshine to me! (I’m thinking of the Teletubbies Sun for any of you 90’s kids out there!) Maybe it is their unique characteristics like the fact that they move with the direction of the sun. (I’m a summer baby and am happiest when I’m just lying there baking in the summer sun like a lizard.) Or maybe it is the geometric pattern of their seeds in the flower center. Nature truly is a wonder to behold and as an adult, I’m constantly learning new things that surprise and excite me about the world we live in.
These plants are a sunflower hybrid introduced from proven winners a couple year ago with the following notable qualities: smaller blooms than your traditional sunflower but SO many of them! Your plant will be packed with blooms well into October and you don’t even have to deadhead. They are smaller and more manageable, although they can definitely fill a space if you let them, they don’t get 6-8’ tall like their cousins. Suncredible Sunflower transforms into a small shrub before the end of the season maxing out at around 2’ tall and wide. The bees love them!!! And we love the bees.. so there you go! Something to think about is 100% Natives are the best for pollinators, but please do not underestimate the power of annuals! Where your perennial will have a few blooms on them for a few weeks, that annual plant will be pumping that nectar out for months like its life depends on it (because it does), and oftentimes I see more pollinators on my annuals. Just food for thought. Diversity = diversity. Longevity of bloom time is important~
Every year that I’ve planted these in my front beds my neighbors have been like, “Woah! What is that?” And I’ve seen strangers stop to take pictures.. which reminds me of the fact that although we plant flowers for ourselves to enjoy and maybe for insects as well, I feel like we may forget about the impact it has on those in our community or neighborhood. Plants and flowers are uplifting and you planting your garden can honestly make a big impact in more lives than you think. I apologize for always being philosophical, but I feel like it is a central mission of our business to share the good news, especially in difficult times. It is refreshing to think about the “little” ways that your/our lives and habits can positively impact others. After all, isn’t that what life is all about?
Sunshine is medicine, and it is my belief that flowers are too.. and with the Suncredible Sunflower, you basically get both in an easy, low maintenance package… so come and get them while they are here! If we sell out, make a note for next year because I promise you will love them. Here comes the sun! And I say... it’s alright 🌻🌻🌻
